IT Boys – what’s in a name?

One reason that I have started using Information Technology or IT as an umbrella term for everything relating to the design and creation of technology is that I love play on words, and the fact that I can use “IT” instead of “it”. I could not help myself from using IT Girls and It Boys for my coaching and mentoring to make sure we don’t forget to have a bit of fun.

 An IT boy is the male counterpart of an IT girl. IT boys are effortlessly popular in their group. They tend to be charming and sweet. IT Boys are usually across the latest trends especially in technology and have the coolest friends. They’re well connected and and ALWAYS make sure they are inclusive, supporting and inviting people to the inner circle. This term is often used for popular guys at school, male celebrities, and fashion designers that are prominent.

IT Boys comes in all shapes, sizes, preferences and vintages. IT Boys Coaching and Mentoring was designed for anyone who identifies as a man, and we warmly welcome non-binary participants who feel this is their scenario.

The ultimate goal of the IT Boys programs is to make the participants realise what amazing IT Boys they are.

Whether you work for yourself or for someone else, you know that you want to contribute to creating a more diverse and inclusive IT culture, but you don’t know what to say in today’s day and age.

What is politically correct and culturally appropriate? How can you support women and other minority groups around you if you are scared to be authentic? How can you be part of building a culture where people feel they belong if you don’t even know what you can say and do?

 Sometimes it can be very awkward to address your challenges with someone at your workplace. Will you get judged if you are struggling? What about if someone finds out? Is it going to impact your future opportunities?

 

IT leaders who are men and want diversity

You may have just been promoted to leadership and feel a bit overwhelmed, or you have been there for a while and are feeling the burnout lurking. 

Who would have thought that leading a team should take up so much time? And now you are being slammed with diversity and inclusion targets, which you would love to smash. But where to start Do you find that dealing with your staff / team members is taking over and you don’t have time to focus on “your job”? Hang on, isn’t part of the job dealing with your team members? What about that report you need to get ready for your boss? Have you given it sufficient time and focus? Are you managing up?

The higher you get in leadership, the more lonely it can get. And if you want to make sure you take your team on an enjoyable journey, it is okay to get some help from someone who has been through it before and can help you navigate the space.

How I work with my clients

Individual coaching & mentoring

One-on-one targeted sessions online (or in person if we can) where we meet weekly, fortnightly, monthly or unlimited times per month to work through your priorities.

Flexible options:

  • Access to mentoring circles and online community.
  • Email support in between sessions
  • Frequency and commitment depending on your needs. 
  • Monthly subscription tailored for your frequency. Minimum 6 months commitment.
  • Pay as you go per session to work on specific challenges / outcomes. Minimum 3 sessions over 6 months.

Coaching and mentoring circles

Facilitated online group sessions (or in-person if we can) with a small group of likeminded people who are here to support each other on a journey. As part of the mentoring circle, we co-design and co-create the program cherry-picking from a smorgasbord of topics and ideas.

Where appropriate, we invite guest speakers (could be a member) on specific topics that will help us address curly challenges.

Online community and resources with relevant topics and actionable insights.

Monthly / annual subscription (minimum 6 months).

Why I coach and mentor

Based on my own lived experience as an IT Girl (woman in tech), for over 30 years, I am acutely aware that there often is a disconnect between people and technology, as well as between the different players. I also know that the  lack of diversity is not about fixing people but rather shifting mindsets and changing behaviours.

To address this, I have developed a coaching approach that is inclusive of every voice and perspective. I provide a unique blend of my experience from running tech teams and businesses, with years of personal mentoring to provide a tailored, personalised experience for every client.

As someone who has often been the “only woman in the room”, is from a culturally and linguistically different background, has felt the intrinsic bias very personally, I have developed thick skin and broad shoulders. I thrive when I can bring others with her on the journey towards inclusion and belonging.
